no you dont, but it gets done on race engines.

the only readon to knife edge a crank is so it'll cut through the oil in the sump easier , you dont need to do nout to a stock engine to fit a lightened flywheel (except fit it of course ) care should be taken on a daily driver , flywheels are heavy for a reason - to make taking up drive when the clutch is released smoother , lighten one to much and it canbe a nightmare to live with everyday .
